About UNC Chapel Hill Medical Brigades

Global Medical Brigades is a non-profit that partners with rural communities around the world, and works with them to provide free medical and dental care and improve their access to healthcare year-round. The UNC Chapel Hill Medical Brigades chapter is a student run organization that participates in week long medical brigades to staff pop up clinics in countries like Honduras, Guatemala, Panama, and Ghana and provide continued access to healthcare to the citizens of these communities. Our team is a diverse group of pre-health and public health students that work together to bridge access gaps and create a better, healthier world, one community at a time.

What do teams need to do?

Preliminary: Online Challenge

Online challenge (multiple choice, fill in the blanks, and free-response questions)

Each team member will individually attempt the same set of challenge questions

The top two scores will be used to calculate the team total score

Semi-Final: Poster / Video

Semi-finalist teams will have one week to develop a solution to a science or engineering problem

Final: Live Zoom Presentation

Finalist teams present solutions to a judging panel

Competition format

Preliminary round: Online Challenge

Description: The preliminary round is open to all registered teams worldwide

Format:
  • Online challenge (multiple choice, fill in the blanks, and free-response questions)
  • Each team member will individually attempt the same set of challenge questions
  • The top two scores will be used to calculate the team total score

Date: March 20, 2027

Time Allowed: Lower Primary: 45 min, Upper Primary: 1 hour

Time:
  • Asia Pacific: 12:00 noon Tokyo Time
  • Europe, Middle East, Africa: 9:00 am London Time
  • North America, South America: 11:00 am New York Time
Semi-final round: Poster / video

Description: The top 3 performing teams from each grade level in the preliminary round will be invited to compete

Format:
  • Lower Primary: Create a poster with a solution to a science problem
  • Upper Primary: Develop a solution and present through a recorded video

Date: April 3, 2027

Final round: live Zoom presentation

Description: The top 5 performing teams from the semi-final in each category will be invited

Format: Finalist teams refine and improve solutions based on judges feedback and present live
